He was manga-only! He wasn't even in a "real" Dragon Ball manga! He still popped up in Heroes (following his alternate-costume appearance in DBZ2) with a voice actor. I'm really with ya', though. This many years on, with the manga being one of two primary continuations of the series (it and the two movies), it's getting bonkers.
Dragon ball was a lot more enjoyable than manga of its time and it had an overarching story of sorts as well. The characters were fun to watch interact and develop through time. However, newer contenders simply brought better writing and compelling stories. Dragon ball has a habit of abandoning some characters and their growth.

Yes, the first 16 episodes of GT were a more fantastical and adventure-focused Dragon Ball hunt, and Funimation initially skipped most of them to "get to the action" sooner. That was only at first though, for the dub's original TV run and DVD releases. Nowadays it's all thankfully presented in proper order instead.
